Durst Avenue in Greenwood was organized in 1930 by C. E. McAbee with only five members. With so few members and the
church in its infancy, the congregation was compelled to worship in a room of a
house for about two years. During the time J.C. Brooks pastored one year, and
Nettie Hanvey was in charge of the work the second year.
God smiled upon the church during the ministry of Nettie Hanvey and under her leadership the first small building was erected. Several pastors followed who did a good work for the church and God.
In 1936 C. E. McAbee returned to pastor; and under his leadership the church building was
enlarged to about twice its original size.
The work on the building was done by
the men of the church who would work their eight hours in the local mill and
then come to church and work the rest of the day. Those who worked the second
shift at the mill would work at the church all morning before going to their
secular jobs. The cost of the building was $10,000.
